ART FOR LUNCH - OIL PAINTING

Students will learn to see shapes instead of lines in this ‘paint what you see, not what you know' approach. Individual instruction will be emphasized in this "Impressionistic" method with a focus on subject matter, composition, materials as well as personal expression. Demonstrations and critiques will also be included. Open to both beginning and more advanced students. Call 757-625-4211 for list of materials.
Choose to take class for 1 or 2 hours; parking is included in 2 hour tuition rate.

d'ART ADULT EVENING CLASSES
THEORY & PRACTICE OF PAINTING

For ages 15 - Adult, beginning and experienced painters.
This class provides instruction on methods and materials of painting tailored to the individual needs of the students. Exercises and critiques will cover the basics of color, value, shape and composition with an emphasis on the process of seeing. Instruction ranges from painting exercises for beginners to the exploration of highly specific solutions of individualized problems for the more experinced painters. Add in lively art discussions and an occasional trip to local museums and you have ingredients for a fun learning experience.
Mediums include oil, acrylic and watercolor - your choice!

Beginning & Beyond DRAWING

For Ages 15- Adult. Learn to see as an artist as you learn to draw. Students will explore basic techniques of art as they use a variety of media including charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, oil sticks, and graphite and experiment with line and form, value and shading, composition and design, visualization and sight measurement. This is a great class for those just starting out or for those who are painting already and want to improve their drawing skills.

This small class of hand building and wheel work will concentrate on the basic skills and fundamentals of the medium, firing techniques and glaze applications. For both beginning and continuing students with a desire to improve their skills. Personal expression and direction are encouraged.

Beyond Beginning - HAND & WHEEL POTTERY

Will address using slabs of clay in an organic manner. Personal direction encouraged as well as wheel working pointers.

PAINTING VIBRANT COLORS

For beginning and continuing students ages 15-adult, who want to expand their experience of the medium. Focus will be on mixing colors, brush handling, and composition with an emphasis on individual expression and development of a personal view point. The goal is to create original watercolor paintings that are fresh and bold. Call for materials 757.625.4211.

WORLD IN A PIXEL
Karl Watson, InstructorFor ages 15- Adult. This class will help expand your vision and get the most from your digital camera. Your photography will improve as you learn to better use "the setup" of your digital camera, computer and post camera software (such as Google's free Picasa). From in-class critiques, to mid-week e-mail discussion to a trip to the Chrysler Museum, students will focus on the world of pixels and photography. There will be a strong emphasis on both the basics of photography and creative approaches to taking pictures.

NEW! COLOR PENCIL DRAWING

This course is designed to introduce students to color pencil drawing in all its forms, from rapid sketching to more detailed studies and how to work exclusively in tone. Students will use a variety of techniques focusing on composition, value, negative/positive space and form and are encouraged to look at various styles from artists for inspiration, and keep a personal sketchbook. The goal for each student is to develop his/her own style and have fun, while fine-tuning powers of observation. Call for materials 757-625-4211.

EXPLORATION in DRAWING & PAINTING: For Ages 6-10

This class is structured to encourage the imagination and self-expression through experience of water-based paints, charcoal and graphite. Students will be inspired to use their mind's eye as they develop skills in the use of color, form, and shape as they develop basic skills and techniques.

MAKE IT & TAKE IT WORKSHOPS
Precious Metal Copper WORKSHOP
Deb Munroe, Instructor
For ages 16 and up. Learn jewelry making techniques in the new medium of precious metal copper including handling of the medium, preparation, fabrication, finishing and firing. Students will make earrings, pendants, bracelets and with skills in texture and molding will be able to create any style of jewelry. No experience needed.

Transform your favorite shoe into the story of your life, a stunning landscape, a vacation journal, a personal experience or any creation of your choice using it as a medium of creative expression. Open to children and adults.

Ekphrasis: Poetry and Visual Art
Ekphrasis - the conversation between art and poetry! Ekphrasis is considered to be a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate to another by defining and describing its essence and form. A descriptive work of prose or poetry, may then highlight what is shown in the visual arts, and in doing so, may enhance the original art. Writers are invited to view the artwork in the d'ART Center Mid-Atlantic Exhibit opening April 23 and be inspired to write about their experience.
May 9, 2010 ~ Poetry readings will take place on May 9 starting at 2:30p.m. Refreshments served. FREE and Open to all.
Oil Pastels One Day Workshop
Instructor: Janice Gay-Maker
Oil Pastels are richly colorful and versatile medium! Begin the day with a discussion on materials and technique, students will move on to simple color theory and line exercises. Afternoon will allow students time to complete a project working from a still life or photos.
