On Exhibit: October 2 - November 1, 2009
ART Reception: October 9, 2009, 6-8:00 PM - MEET the Artists!
An extraordinary art exhibition featuring the regions' renown Artists and Educators in Sculpture, Prints & Paintings spanning three countries and two continents.
Greg Henry, Kwabena Ampofo-Anti, Solomon Isekeije
These three Artists each bring their own perspective to their unique artwork!
"NEXUS: Is a coming together of artist with a Diaspora background to explore the dynamics of cultural transformation, material exploration, and creative ideas in the visual arts. As artists we are travelers within a collective consciousness, striving to understand ‘self' the notion of "the other" and the common space (environment), we all share. ‘Nexus' is the result of our artistic perceptions as image makers." - Solomon Isekeije
Solomon Isekeije uses the images of his youth in Nigeria as a reference for everyday human interaction. His artworks are influenced by Africa mythology, symbolism and artistic forms.
Artist Ampofo-Anti's ceramic sculptures are inspired by African architecture. His artistic structures attempt to create a sanctuary thus ensuring the ancestors can communicate their "presence" to the "present". "As an Artist with a shared memory our creative partnerships help us intensify our connectedness. Through my participation in Nexus, I hope to contribute to this exhibition to strengthen our humanistic bonds." -- Ampofo-Anti
Artist Greg Henry uses simple, everyday objects from his Guyanese culture that surrounded him in his youth - architectural structures, utilitarian objects and animal forms - and creates his art to portray cultural iconography. "My hope is that the iconographic serves as visual prompt that may cause the realization of a universal connectedness to self, others and enviroment." -- Greg Henry
